Band

I am currently enrolled in Jackson Middle School's Honors Band as an oboist.

In band, we have gone on to do many things individually and as a band.

One contest that we went to individually was the Region 3 All-Region Contest on November 11, 2023.
At this contest, we competed against many different players throughout our region for a spot in one of four bands.

As a result of this contest, I earned a chair in the top band of the region.
We also had the most students at Jackson earn a chair in one of the bands, 41.

Another individual contest we had was the Forney ISD Solo & Ensemble Contest.
At this contest, we all prepared a solo and performed it for a judge. We then got graded on a scale of 1-5 (best to worst) for our solo.

I ended up recieving a 1 for my solo, as well as an Outstanding Solo remark.
From Jackson, we had a total of 26 kids get an Outstanding Solo remark out of 67 Outstanding Solo remarks given. Photo of Lyle Springer at Forney ISD's Solo & Ensemble Contest.

We are now preparing for a UIL contest as a band. Lyle Springer with Mr. Graves, band director of Jackson.

The instrument that I play is entitled the oboe. The oboe is a double reed instrument which means that it requires very extensive control and maintenance in order to play. Photo of an oboe.

A crucial part that makes the oboe the way it is, is the double reed on the top. This is made up of two reeds that vibrate against each other to produce the sound. These reeds require extensive work on and can take days to create just one good-sounding and playable reed. Photo of an oboe reed.
